If the odor smells like corn chips, it's yeast......Most yeast problems are formed from excessive grain based dog foods.....The carbs. turn into sugar in the system...Yeast feeds off of sugar.....This is usually the beginning, but can be reversed with HIGH QUALITY grain free foods (Preferably fresh foods) & probiotics......Karla
Margot makes a good point about yeast infections, which commonly occur in or around the ears, but also on other parts of the body. If your dog has been scratching his ears excessively, then there's an indication of a yeast infection. Also check his body all over looking for dry, reddish brown skin or areas that have become crusty in nature. You can ask your vet to perform a thyroid function test, which is easily done from a blood sample. Tony
You may also want to have the dog checked for a yeast infection and have thyroid checked. Regular
Brushing is often better than frequent bathing.
A friend of my daughter had a Basset Hound that always smelled no matter how often they bathed him or with what. He did end up having a thyroid problem. Just a thought.
First, do be a little cautious how many times you are washing Freddy, as dogs coats need the natural oils to maintain their glossy coat appearance and the health of their coat. Also, washing too frequently can cause dry skin problems. The best dog shampoos are usually those specifically designed for puppies, which tend to be free of perfumes (which can cause irritation and can dry the skin) and are usually slightly milder in nature. As a male dog, he will always have an odour (I've had several male dogs in my lifetime and they have always smelled more than the female dogs I have kept). The other thing to know is that dogs anal glands do occasionally secrete fluid, which can get smelly, but if it is particularly pungent it could be a symptom of infection - this is something to talk to your vet about, taking note of whether he is always smelly, or just periodically. You can also talk to your vet about safe medicated shampoos, which can be expensive, but you only need a little of it each time you bath your dog - and at least by doing this you will know the shampoo is safe for more frequent use.
