Bad smell making me hate my life

I have very unusually and bothersome smell that I have been experiencing for about 6 years now and is gettind worse, but it seems that there has been no cure yet. I've went to two ENT doctors, my primary care doctor and asked my dentist but nothing is working...I have bad breath maybe cause by post nasal drip. I have stuffy noses sometimes, when I breathe from my nose also, there's a very stinky odor that I smell (even people around me can smell it, people always ask "what is that smell, becuase they know i'm clean and that it can't be me but it is), I often swallow excessive mucous from the back of my throat that feels like it stays there, I blow my nose and sometimes I just get clear mucous  also from spitting it out after gargling,  Anyway, those are all the symptoms I can recall as of now...what bothers me the most is the bad smell from my nose and mouth/throat. I always brush and floss my teeth. I used therabreath, breath rx, saline solution and other nasal sprays including mesosilver, but NOTHING worked. I looked online for info concerning this problem and some say it might be post-nasal drip, middle ear infection, catarrh...oh yeh, and some of the time I can't smell it but others still can.  I quit my job becuase I was so imbarrased and have been in my room for a month.  I can't afford to keep going to doctors....What would this bad smell and loss of smell be coming from? Please...I need answers so bad, i'd do anything to get rid of this, it has started to ruin my life.

For my stats,
i'm 26
190lbs
eat a well ballanced diet
drink a gallon of water daily
brush, floss, and rinse

You've had your tonsils out, but did you have your adenoids out which are a form of tonsils as well. Although the adenoids usually disintegrate by adulthood. You may still have yours, but that's rare. Also could be reflux. My ENT prescribed me 150mg of ranitizine (zantac) because I went to him with the same problem as you. I got a prescript for omeprazole 40mg (prilosect) from my GI doc. Maybe you should get an upper GI scope done? Also could be the way you're brushing your teeth. When you brush the back of your tongue, don't pull the toothbrush forward and all the bacteria with it. Get an electric toothbrush and just keep it at the back of your tongue and let it gently clean the area. Rinse the brush off well before cleaning the rest of the tongue. Don't scrub too hard. It can cause a thicker knap on your tongue which more easily traps bacteria. You may have to have a C-scan so your ENT can look at your sinuses. Your sinuses may be really narrow and the mucus may not be draining properly.

I also had a crowned tooth which cracked and was recently extracted.  Tell me more about the stomach infection caused by your bad tooth.  I have a constant odor, seems to be coming from stomach, can feel it in my throat, is chemical/spicy.

I've tried friggy's sinus flush to get rid of a chemical/spicy smell (that only I can smell), but there has been no change in the smell.   My sinuses are clear as can be.

The odor seems to be at its greatest 2 - 3 hours after eating - i.e. at the end of digestion.  No pain in throat or stomach, but the odor is constant and has blocked by sense of smell about 80%.

I had sinus surgery for chronic sinusitis, polyps removed and a septoplasty 5 weeks ago. Everything has been healing well, but for the past 24 hrs I have smelt a very strong ammonia smell, in both nostrils that nobody else can smell! It's comes and goes but never disappears completely.
I haven't got 2nd follow up appointment until end of jan, and I'm wondering what on earth is causing it!

SugaLuv"s comment about a hidden source of bad smell may be relevant information for some people who do not have success with a Sinus Flush in getting rid of Sinus Odor or Phantom Smells or Bad Breath.  One must examine all possibilities for diagnosis.  Thank you for bringing SugaLuv's post to my attention.

What does your post have anything to do with friggy's saline flush?

ICantLiveLikeThis either!  I know exactly what you are talking about!  I have had all of the exact same symptoms as you.  I too have suffered from bad breath (off & on at first) for several years.  Then the allregies started; then the post nasal drips; then the breathe problem became worse.  The problem got so bad in fact, the smell started to stink up my entire office!  I intially went to the dentist for a cleaning (they didn't find anything wrong).  So i thought next of a sinus infection, since I was constantly blowing my nose & spiting up mucous.  Then I ended up having my tonsils & adenoids removed, plus some nasal polyps (spent 3 weeks off work behind this & ran up several hundred dollars in doctors bills). The smell still continued.  FINALLY, after countless hours on the internet (thank God for the internet!!), a guy was nice enough to write an e-book & post it for free (title "What Smells Like ****?")  He stated that his problem was impacted wisdom teeth & something else.  When I read this, I immediately thought about the porcelain crown I had on a left molar tooth from 10 years ago.  I went back to the dentist & lied like the tooth was hurting non-stop.  He took X-rays but admitted that he couldn't see my real tooth because of the crown.  He then asked me if I wanted to have the crown removed & the tooth extracted because the tooth could be broken up under the crown.  I said "Hell Yeah!" because at this point I was determined to rule out any and everything.  Sure enough, when he took the crown off, my tooth under the crown was split literally in 2 pieces!  All that time, and all that money, only to find out that one tooth was causing all of my previous problems.  The allergies, the sinus troubles, the bad breath, I ended up having a stomach infection because of it, and that damn post nasal drip!!!  The tooth was infected and was in turn, infecting and poisoning the rest of my body...A Damn TOOTH!!!!

I am pleased to hear that you've found a solution for what is an unfortunate problem, and thank you very much for the positive feedback.  If you are comfortable with this technique, I would like to further recommend that you continue to flush twice a day for about 3 days after the initial funk goes away, to administer the death blow to the bacteria, because, as you can see, a few bacteria can repopulate rather quickly.  It's the same reason you continue to take antibiotics even though you feel better.

Long story short, YES!  It worked and worked well.  It had to have been caused from my post nasal drip.  All the years of the mucus just draining down my throat and being stuck in the back of my nose and caught in my upper sinuses caused it and still comes back if I don't do it atleast 1-2 times a week.  At first I had to do it about a week before it went away, and after that bam, fresh breath!!!  I still have the post nasal drip so to keep it from coming back I have to do the "dip flip sinus flush" that friggy posted up.  The man figured it out and for that I must give him credit.  For the past 3 years i've been thinking 24/7 in the back of my mind about this embarrasing smell, chewing gum non stop (EVEN WHILE SLEEPING) and now it's finally gone.  I owe my life to ziggy for this.  Any one with this problem, follow the instructions that ziggy posted, it will cure your nasal funk!

I tried EVERYTHING, I started to think it was even in my stomach.  Thanks ziggy, I am now happy again thanks to your post.

I think I have the same problem and I would like to know if friggy's Sinus Flush has helped you.

I also wanted to ask you what kind of smell you have?  Is it sour and pungent, or more musky?  Also, does your dried saliva smell?  I can smell my odor sometimes on the issue after blowing my nose or on my pillow if I have drooled at night.

I really appreciate friggy's help.  I am going to try it out.

As tomsant mentioned, it is most likely an anaerobic bacteria, which may or may not respond to antibiotics.  I had the problem also, until I invented a saline sinus flush.

http://www.medhelp.org/user_journals/show/2322

Unfortunately, the flush is mildly risky, because it requires bending over in a shower or elsewhere, which could possibly cause dizziness and a fall in some people. So my first advice is to go to Walgreen's or Target and get a Neilmed Sinus Rinse $12. This will work if the infection is in your lower sinuses.

If, more likely, it's in your upper sinuses, gravity will defeat the Neilmed.  This is where you have to decide to risk a sinus flush, or smelling like shish.  You are young, so at very low risk.

The instructions look complicated because of precautions, but simply put, it is:  tilt head back, squirt in saline (use the Neilmed bottle), pinch nose, bend over carefully, release nose let saline drain into upper sinuses, stand up very carefully, and gently blow nose. Do 2 or 3 times a day, and you should be able to go into public in a week or less. Keep doing it for a few days after the smell goes away, cause it has a way of sneaking back up on you.  Also, gargle with the saline to clean the funk out of  throat and tonsils.

Good luck,
friggy

Good luck

I had a very similar incident happen to me awhile back, and after much frustration, I figured it out. It was my tonsils. Do you still have yours? The tonsils trap bacteria which can collect in the crevices. I take a q-tip swab and gently press on the side of the tonsil until it dislodges the offensive wad of stuff that has backed up in there. It can literally smell like something that has died!!! If the tonsils are infected, then an antibiotic is definitely needed. It's hard to tell at times, but generally I know when mine are infected because they look a bit swollen are usually redder than normal.

Sure hope this helps!

What do you think about this zmax?  The doctor gave me heartburn med.  "purple pill"

He was saying it was like acid reflux, but that is not the case.  This smell is either coming from my post nasal drip, or from something in my belly.

When I had my tonsils taken out years ago, I developed this habbit of sucking the snot from my nose, and it feels like there is always snot in the back of my nose/throat so I really think maybe the smell is from that.  It doesn't just come from my nose, it's both mouth and nose.

I can't be around people without someone asking who farted, or what is that smell.  I am 100% with no doubt sure that I have a huge prob with the way I smell.  I can promise that not 1 minute goes by in a day where I don't think about it, and wonder how it can go away.   I was laid off from work and don't have the money to keep going to a doctor that I feel doesn't care enought or either know enough to help me with my problem.  I'm just praying someone has had the same problem and knows how to fix it.

Offensive smell with postnasal dripping of mucus for such long time  may mean sinus infection with anaerobic bacteria. But an ENT can find out after listening to your story and examining you.

What did your ENT say? Did he experience this bad smell when he examined you? (Or was it your 'conclusion' that people are getting bad smell from you?)

Best rgds,

TA
