Black stuff in ear

My 3 year old daughter woke up this morning with her ear canal and the outer part of her ear covered in a black, tary substance. What is it??? I have never seen anything like this. Please help...

if it's coming from inside, that can be fungus

More than likely....  old wax that has become moist through batheing swimming etc.
