Cricopharyngeal spasm?

After six months of pain and discomfort, I think that I may have finally found an answer. Has anyone ever experienced cricopharyngeal spasms? I feel a tightening across my chin and down my throat which feels muscular. It makes me want lift my chin up to make it feel better. I also have discomfort which feels like swelling, but I have never seen swelling, in the base of my mouth under my tongue, and occasionally in my tongue along the sides and base near the throat. Eating makes it feel better but it comes right back. The tightness in my throat makes it feel as if someone has their hand on my throat and occasionally makes me feel like I am not getting enough air when I am having no problems breathing. I am being treated for GERD (Zantac 150mg twice a day) and allergies (NasalCrom four times a day). I also use a neti pot once a day which has basically eliminated my post-nasal drip, and the NasalCrom helps with swelling. I still experience reflux on the Zantac, it just does not hurt. Does this sound like cricopharyngeal spasm? Can these cause sensations of pain and discomfort inside the mouth as well?

Hi there,

I have been diagnosed with Chricopharengeal muscle dysfunction after 4 years of throat pain/chronic pharingitis, etc.  I have a long medical history and severe GERD and had a Nissen Fundo done during Feb 2012 but no improvement to throat.

Eventually I had a consult with an Otolaryncologist who did an Esophagoscopy, dialation to the muscle and injected 20ml botillium into the Chrico muscle.  I had 2 months of almost NO symptoms and discomfort!  but unfortunately it only lasts 2-3 months and then the effect of the botillium wears off and I am getting my next injection in a month's time.

The Botillium injections does work!
