Dry nose, throat and sinuses

I had a cold a for awhile and a friend told me I should put some apple vinegar in water and boil the water and breath in the steam. I did that and my cheeks got red so I stopped. At the time I did not feel any different really but the next morning my nose, throat and sinuses were dry. My cold seemed to disappear but now I had the other extreme. It seems like mucus glands stopped working. My throat is very dry and my nose is so dry I have had 1 or 2 nose bleeds. I guess I am just hoping that I temporarily irritated something and that the mucus production will come back. I guess I am wondering how serious this is. It has lasted for 22 days so far.
