Food goes into sinuses when I swallow? Bad nasal breath sometimes

I've noticed that when I eat, and especially when I drink, that some of the food tends to go up into my sinus?  I can put my tongue to the roof of my mouth and make a suction in the back of my throat that pulls some mucus out.  The mucus is always the color of whatever I last ate or drank.  Also, periodically, my wife notices that I have very bad nasal breath (but not mouth breath)

Any idea what's going on?

That happens when I'm sick.  I can get mucus from my nose to my throat and spit it out.  Lovely, right?  Does it go the other way with food?  I'm not sure what you are asking.
