Funny lump on the front of my neck

So I found this lump on the front of my neck early this week.  It is slightly offset to the right but mainly in the front and at the base of my neck.  Just above my collarbone.  I went to the doctor and they gave me a strep test and also a mono test and they both came back negative.  I have had a low fever, I have been very tired and this lump is just sitting there.  It is about quarter size and there is also some swelling starting where the lump is and goes up the side of my neck but the lump is very promanent.  What the heck could this be?  I do not have a sore throat or anything like that.  This might sound weird but has anyone ever been to a movie and tried to hold back from crying and you have this funny feeling lump in your throat that is almost painful?  That is what this feels like every day.  I just have no idea what this could be.  I asked them if it could be a thyroid problem but they said there is no chance since I do not have a history of thyroid problems.  I am out of ideas.  Someone please help me figure out what this is!!!  They did tell me that if I still have a low fever and the swelling in the neck then I need to come back at the end of the week right away (whatever that means).  HELP!

Sincerely,
Lost in thought

I too found a small hard lump in the right side of my neck, where your Adams Apple would be, I'm a female, but, I'm experiencing a burning, sore throat & ear ache only on the right side..Also I've found other swollen lumps but not hard & they're also only on the right side, when I swallow my throat feels really tight & I'm coughing up phlegm but chest doesn't seem congested..Also VERY fatigued!!!...Idk I don't have insurance but went to the E.R & they did a strep test which came back negative so they sent me on my way saying it was a viral infection. But I have no other cold symptoms & the lump is getting bigger!!!.Unfortunately I am a smoker, so, I'm REALLY freaking out!!! I was just wondering if you got yours checked & if you have an update??
Or does anyone with any info or advice for me??
I'm a mom of 4 amazing sons plz help!!!!

I have been dealing with the same thing for roughly 8 years now.  It was discovered when I went to the doctors for a routine physical when I was fifteen.  The doctor said that there was nothing that they could determine without a cat scan and without insurance, I couldn't afford it.  So, I have been living with it for a while now, thinking it was just some sickness that would go away with some antibiotics.  However, my mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year.  Knowing of my issues, she asked the doctor if it was hereditary and he said that it was.  Doing some research, we found that her mother, sister and grandmother had all had problems with their thyroid, aswell.  Perhaps, if a member of your immediate family has had thyroid problems, you may have inherrited it from them.  Just a thought.
