Itchy ear canal but NO infection

For several years my left ear canal has been itching - sometimes to the point my husband likes me to a dog with fleas! My doctor checked for infection - none, but said the skin way dry which explains the crusty flakes that sometimes appear. When an itch comes on there is nothing that I can do to control myself no matter the company I am in. I've tried lotions and even mineral oil and nothing seems to work. Typically is worse when I'm right out of the shower or during the night. Right now, in the middle of the day, it is calm and smooth. Possibly a drainage? If so, what to do?? Thanks!

I had the same problem in both ears after using a new shampoo/conditioner.  I was finally diagnosed with eczema in my ears and prescribed steroid drops.
