Swollen tonsils for two months, no other symptoms?

Hi... I've had swollen tonsils since around.. March 16th. I went to a walk in clinic and they swabbed me for strep. I didn't have it. I then went to my family doctor on march 27th, and he said it was a viral infection and i had to let it take its course. He gave me some mouth wash that was supposed to take down the swelling but it didn't work. It's now may 19th, and my tonsils are STILL swollen. I'm very scared, and I don't know what could be causing it. I don't have trouble breathing, I don't have any flu symptoms. The only thing I do have is phlegm, but I'm not overly worried about that. Could someone help? I'm only 17 and I really need some answers. I don't like knowing the fact that theres something not quite right.

I just saw an ENT through Kaiser who told me the rule of thumb is if the tonsils are swollen more than 6 times out of the year, then have a tonsillectomy. Or I could still opt to have the surgery if I felt it was necessary for my quality of life. He wouldn't advise it though if not necessary if I was his family member.

My mom has had hers out since childhood and is 71yrs old. She is not prone to pneumonia. I am 39 yrs old with swollen tonsils, no fever, no pain, just a slight discomfort and notice more difficulty in swallowing these last couple of months. Also, a change in my voice. I had mono as a teenager which an allergy specialist told me increases the size of the tonsils permanently. I've always had larger than average tonsils. Kissing tonsils when I have a cold.  I have had pneumonia twice in the last 2 yrs! Otherwise am healthy, not overweight, but yet now loud breathing at night noticed by my husband. I'm thinking possibly sleep apnea due to waking up tired since large tonsils can cause sleep apnea. I will follow up with my Doctor soon.

My co-worker is my age and had her tonsils out a few months ago and is glad she did. She feels she can breathe better, but said the healing from the surgery is a difficult one. She advised 2 weeks off of work. She had to go to the ER 7 days post op due to bleeding. They had to cauterize the tonsils due to a ruptured blood vessel. My ENT told me this happens in 1 out of 6 surgeries!!! Yikes!

Very interesting info about the long term enlargement after having Mononucleosis. I’m 47, had Mono when I was 19. I couldn’t pinpoint that exactly but I’ve always seem to have extra phlegm issues, tonsil issues. If I workout in the cold or windy weather my tonsils and ears ache. I guess I should also see an allergist. Thanks for the heads up tho!

Have you been any better? My tonsils have been swollen since january, no pain or fever. There is just discomfort when swallowing but i cannot say that it is painfull. I went to the doctor and did the throat swabs 3x since it started but the results came out to be negative from strep.

How has it been since? I have a very similar case. Lumpy tonsils, no pain and 3 doctors said it was nothing to worry about. But it has not healed at all, it looks the same from when I first noticed it!!

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter Saedge.

Did any of the medications help her? The steroid reduce swelling?  I have been taking Duke's magic mouthwash which is a prescription mouthwash that has antibacterial, antifungal and a steroid.  I've found that my tonsils are a little less swollen and I think it's because the steroid is weakening my immune system around my throat area (when I stop doing it, the tonsils seem to get a little bit larger).

Taking out the tonsils is not an easy decision.  It seems many doctors don't recommend as much as they had in the past.  Perhaps there are other complications later in life without them.  That being said, others say they are better without them.  It's not an easy call.  I personally don't want mine out, but I guess if this goes on for 10+ months or years, I may have a change of heart.

Best of luck to you and your daughter.  Let us know how you are doing.

My daughter has had swollen tonsils for 10 months now. We have been to many doctors, had several rounds of antibiotics, allergy medications and steroids. She developed sleep apnea and has to use a Cpap machine, she has to carry an inhaler. She was a healthy active kid before this. Her primary wants her tonsils taken out and referred us to a surgeon. He says he can not remove them unless they are swollen to a level of 4.0 which is essentially blocking her entire throat. She is currently at a 3.5. I am at a loss for what to do. It is so frustrating to watch your child suffer. Her tonsils don't usually hurt, just interferes with her breathing at times. Due to our insurance I don't have an option of taking her to a different surgeon.

Has anyone been cured of these issues?  I have the same symptoms as others on the thread for 2 months.  Swollen tonsils, no fever or congestion at all.  It doesn't seem to be getting better at ALL.

There has to be a way to fix this issue, no?  Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have had what I think are swollen tonsils on the right side since dec off and on.  In Feb they became sore and I came down with a horrible whooping cough and flu mixture.  After 4 weeks that finally went away.  I went to the dr 3 times and they did chest x-rays, blood work, etc...they all said it was a virus.  After I finally thought I had gotten rid of all of it, the swollen side is back.  You can see them right?  like little bean shapes in the folds of my throat and there aren't any on the other side...I can feel them when swallowing.  No white patches, sometimes I have ear pain.  Does anyone know what this could be?  Can a virus last that long?  I have no insurance and another visit to the dr seems pointless...

I also have a swollen right tonsil. I went to the ENT and she said I should remove my tonsil. Actually all doctors have told me the same thing.
I have been reluctanct to take them out because I m afraid.
My appointment is on the 14 of March 2011 and today is the 1st of March 2011. I have no pain on the right tonsil, and no real problems breathing except before I go to bed. The left nostril hole of my nose seems to clog when I want to go to bed and when I sleep to the right it opens up.
The doctor said my septum is not straight and that I need a Septum Operation. I m 40 years old and I have had the large right tonsil for 8 years now. Until about a year it started to really bother me because of the smell, the stones coming out of the smaller one and the white liquid comming out of the right one. I hope the operation goes well. I m Insured and the Medicine I try through the years was Amoxicilin, 1000mg, cedrofraxil or something like that. I also have Chronic bronchitis since I m a 8 year old child and all of this side  effects have made me decide to Operate my tonsils out. I have tried Salt water and Accupunture and it did not help lower the right tonsil. I also heard a guy did not take them out and after 8 years he died of a heart attack. I believe he did not go to the doctor because it is possible to dye if the Bacteria goes to the Heart.
I have also been told that I had a virus at one time called epstein Virus.
just to get angry with my house doctor because he did not give me anything when the Virus was Current. I dont know if their is any medicine for the epstein Virus and I believe that their is no medicine for it.
Alot of people get this Virus through Kissin a Person.

You say you have some phlegm. I bet you have a sinus infection and the drainage is causing your tonsils to flare a bit. Not unusual especially for me. I always have drainage from my right ear so my right tonsil and lymph nodes are always on high alert.

Do you have some allergies?

Did your swollen tonsils ever go away? If so, what did you have and how did it go away?

The reason I ask, I'm afflicted with the same thing... Don't know why...  and the doctors basically say don't worry about it... it'll go away on its own, it's just a bacteria or something. But I am worried about swollen tonsils, cause, well, this isn't right. And it hasn't gone away yet. And it makes me have trouble breathing at night, it's so swollen.

Let me know, thanks!

My daughter is three years old and she has had swollen tonsils for about two months now. The Dr. doesn't know why. She says that she needs her tonsils out. But all she has tried is steroids and allergy meds. Steroids brought the swelling down a little but as soon as she was done with them they went back. It worries me because she is having problems breathing at night sometimes. Some nights are worse then others. I dont know why she hasn't tried antibiotics. But they don't seem to bother my daughter very much. I have noticed that she chokes more than she ever did. I have an app. with a specialist in a week but if anyone else has any answers please let me know. I will let you know what this Dr. says.  Thx
