Tooth DK is right, if it's that swollen a trip to the ER would be wise. Although the reasons are mosst likely what Bhups1 mentioned, you don't want it to get worse and block the place where you breathe thru.
If your tongue is that swollen you should go to the ER. As BHUPS1 said, it could be many causes, but you can't try to find out on your own. My tongue has been swollen for 2 months. I went to an ENT doc and he said everything with the swabs of my throat came back normal. You could have an allergy, you could have bitten your tooth. Try some antihistamine pills and see if the swelling goes down. If it does, then you have an allergy. Do you have any oral problems like bad teeth, smelly mouth? White tongue?
Do yourself a big favor and go to the ER if you can't swallow, if it got better go see your doc. Don't let it sit on its own waiting for it to go away. Like I said, it's been over 2 months for me.
Good luck.
