Tonsil Problems

A couple months ago I noticed pain when swallowing on the right side of my throat.  I took a flashlight and saw that my right tonsil was inflamed and covered with white specks.  I went to my general physician...she ruled out strep throat.  She gave me a 10-day antibiotic...she wasn't quite sure what the problem was.  I went through the antibiotic and saw no improvement.  That was about a month ago.
Recently, it looks as if the left tonsil is also becoming inflamed/swollen.  Any ideas of what this could be?
I have no other symptoms except swollen neck glands.
I have been a smoker for about 5 years.  I'm 22 years old.  I rarely drink alcohol.

Thank you.

I have a feeling our tonsils need to be removed...
I'm actually seeing an ENT tomorrow.  I'm going to request to skip all these other things (shots, antibiotics) and go straight to getting the tonsils removed.  I've been dealing with this for too long to keep trying new things.

I've had a swollen tonsil for almost 2 weeks now, and had 2 shots of rocephin , and am still taking azithromycin....typically when i get a sore throat , a shot starts working over night usually.....now both of my tonsils are inflamed....it's like the antibiotics aren't budging the tonsil...my throat isn't sore,...i've had a low grade fever once or twice....i'm lost.....salt water doesn't help, mouthwash and peroxide seems to , slightly help with "noticing" that when i swallow there's a mass of swollen tonsil in my throat......
my glands are swollen as well....again, usually with shots of antibiotic, they start going down....but no luck..... i'm beginning to worry.....   not sure what to do.,..
