Tonsillitis??!

I am a 20 year old female. About a week ago I found I was having difficulty swallowing, as I knew it would take a while before I could get in to see my regular doctor I went to a walk in clinic. The doctor there looked at my tonsils and told me I had tonsillitis (he also did a throat swab). He said he could see little while bumps on my tonsils and prescribed anti biotics.

After a few days of antibiotics I did not find that the pain in my throat had gone down and I had a high fever for 2 days that was almost impossible to bring down. I went back to the doctor to express my concern and he had me tested for mono. The test came back negative.

I now have the same pain in my throat (my fever seems to have gone away) and woke up yesterday morning with very swollen gums. I can hardly bite down or chew even very soft foods. Could these be related??

When I swallow it felt like there where little bumps all along the back of my tongue/throat... but when I looked in the mirror at my tonsils they were covered in little white patches. These patches are quite hard but can be "picked" off...

I have no idea what is wrong, but am going to get in to see my regular doctor asap. Should I also be seeing a dentist? Has anyone experienced similar symptoms?

This sounds like it could be tonsil stones if you are able to remove them and they are hard, as you have described. Although this seems to be a minor case scenario, you'll be fine. No need to see a dentist. Visit your doctor and talk about it. You may have to get an oral irrigator or simply scoop them out with a disinfected oral utensil. Either way, talk to your doctor first.

That sounds limited to your throat. I would see a dentist as a last resort.
