I have had this same problem for years also and recently figured something that makes it heal and something that is causes it to come back. Diflucan will heal the split. I take three 200mg pills one a day for 3 days. Depending on how large the split is, or how long you've had it, you may need more but, you'll see it helping by the third day for sure! ( you'll have to ask your doc for the script) Don't put neopsorin on it!  Put a little Lotrimin or Lamisil dabbed on a q-tip.    I  started trying to pay attention to what has been happening when it does come back and it is when I have had a round of antibiotics!  Antibiotics cause an overgrowth of yeast in your system.  I believe the split is "form" of a yeast infection.  A yeast infection can form in any moist part of your body.  HIgh Sugar/High Carb diets cause an overgrowth of yeast in the blood also therefore causing the same problem.  Neosporin IS an antibiotic ointment!  Therefore it only feeding the yeast infection and making it worse. The Lotrimin or Lamisil will NOT work on its own but it does help and is soothing. ( re: the yogurt thing???, "some" yogurts actually contain yeast, and many yogurts are high in sugar so it depends on what yogurt you are eating otherwise, the plain yogurt is supposed to combat yeast) Hope this helps!

My husband and I both have had a painful, red, split in the front side of one nostril also.  His split did go away after he stopped most of the sugar in his diet.  I recently have done the same, but did not have the same response. I use Ayr aloe saline gel (in the tube, not the spray version) every day year round to avoid dry nostrils. If it gets worse, or flares up, bacitracin for a day or two calms it down.

I had the same problem. I kept applying hydrogen peroxide to the area straight from the squirt bottle. Started clearing up within hours. Maybe a fungus or bad bacteria. All I know, is that it worked.

I suffered with this and have been anaemic for a couple of years (if not more, as I only went to the Doctor then).  Eventually after my iron levels didn't respond, my GP tested for coeliac disease.  I was diagnosed a couple of months ago so it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference, now I'm on a gluten free diet.  I think I was lacking in vitamins and minerals because my gut wasn't absorbing them and wonder if that's why my nose kept splitting.  Splits in the corner of the mouth and mouth ulcers are a symptom of coeliac disease.  Just a theory, but might be worth getting it checked.

Do any of you have thyroid issues?  I feel this might be related to our problem.

I must concur with Sadiejgirl

This was indeed the case for me. One of my nostrils will experience splitting any time I consume large amounts of carbohydrates or foods with sugar and I do not immediately burn off all those calories with INTENSE exercise. This issue has plagued me since being a teenager and I am turning 45 this year. Now the problem has manifested into dry cracked and splitting skin inside the nostrils whenever my diet includes too much sugar. I would also suggest that anyone experiencing this problem simply stop consuming sugary foods. It's hard I know. I love bread, and I pay dearly for it when I eat it, but when I want my skin to heal, I must stop all sugar and high carb foods. Plain and simple.

I would also add that I am not a naturalist nut or someone pushing holistic healing or anything. I am just someone who now understands that the foods I have eaten over my lifetime are not the best for my body. Our society has simply developed to include these high sugar foods. I grew up eating giant bowls of sugar coated cereals, eating cakes, ice cream, drinking soda everyday, grabbing fast food on the run and consuming frozen dinners regularly. It's what I knew. I know better now because my health is more quickly effected by what I eat. It's also not about someone preaching or telling you what to eat or what to do. Just some extra knowledge to help out.

We heal ourselves or hurt our bodies many times from the inside out! I have had these same splits that seem to never heal. Yes,painful. They are contributions of a high sugar diet. If I allow sugar into my diet my skin pays the price. If you are someone that eats sugary snacks & enjoys carbohydrates daily try avoiding them for two weeks. Sugar is toxic. Some of us feel sensitivities easier in ways others may not. Do not cover the symptoms ignorantly. Avoid Sugar!

I had gastric bypass surgery a little over 3 years ago-
and as a forever result, we are not allowed to consume sugar or we get drastically sick. I have had the same problem with the split in my nostril (?usually in onebor the other-slternates sides) I can honestly say as one who has not had sugar in over 3 years it is not from sugar. What else can it be? One study I saw says vitamin B12 -not enough? Thoughts?

I came across these comments when searching for answers relating to my ongoing splits and fissures in my nostrils. I too was sick of how long i had them and very curious about why they reoccur. In the end thr only treatment that worked for me was applying ozonated olive oil morning and night. Immediate improvement and relief. After 4 days it was really good. By the end of 1 week it was healed!

You are correct. Told to use this by dermatologist and cleared it right up and has never come back. It’s a herpes type virus caipirinha. Medicine is spelled Mupirison I think.
Caipirinha is a typo

I agree with OHNS2010, I had this for years,  also I get cold Shaw on the nose I do use cold saw cream for that. Now nose splits are slowly going away with iron tablets.  I think it's something to do with our iron level. I had very low iron level. I think best to check out the iron level and change the food pattern will help. Just read the body by watching what you eat and the reaction to it in your body.  If I eat yogurt I will get the split nose next day morning.

Same thing has happened to me for the last 2 years.  I can't see the split, but I can tell that's what it is.  Mine has been split open for about 3 months straight now and I can feel the split getting bigger.  I have no clue what it is, but if someone finds out, please post.  I have a history of basal cell and so I'm always worried about skin cancer:(

omg,

that's me too! It's happening to my right nostril in the front and I'm so embarrassed. I've tried vasoline, neosporin, vitamins, all of that.

WHAT IS IT?????????????

Hi,

The cracking of the skin is due to dryness and lack of vitamins. Try using Neosporin ointment twice daily, drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. If there are dry crusts try to remove it after soaking it in warm salt water, do not try to peel off the dry crusts just like that or else it will leave a sore skin below. Avoid working in dry environment as much as possible.

Regards
OHNS2010
