Do you have any other ear symptoms, or sinus problems?  How does the heart beat sound, even and regular and 1 per second, or a little faster,  when lying down?  The good side is you have an opportunity to listen to your heart beat and a regular beat should give you at least that to be happy about.  Yes, I am more involved in heart rhythm problems then ears...

I very rarely hear my HB, and then only when lying in bed and resting.  I'm not listening for it, it just unannounced appears.  In my case the sound is very low, not a thumping.

Back to my first point, look for other symptoms, something is causing it and breathing congestion could cause or at least aggravate the problem.
