I know this answer might be 8 years too late but wanted to help you/others as the need arises. I’m 19 years old and have suffered a continuous what I refer to as a whooshing in my right year for almost 6 months. I went to an ENT who thought I had fluid in my middle ear and inserted a tube. The sound remained. The whooshing was very rhythmic (exactly in time with my heartbeat) and it would stop is I put pressure below my affected ear. After a lot of research I went back to said ENT with the thought that it was possibly patulous eustation (sorry for the terrible spelling of medical terms... I’m an accounting major not pre-med) tube. Basically this means that the eustation tube doesn’t stay shut like it should. My mom told me to get a second opinion. Second ENT diagnosed it as venous hum (something the first ENT never mentioned at all) and recommended that I take a low dose aspirin once a day. While the whooshing come back a little as I get close to the 24 hour mark, I have seen a HUGE improvement. Through trial and error I have found that taking it in the morning is better since as the 24 hour mark approaches and it starts to wear off I’m asleep so it doesn’t bother me. I understand your pain and how frustrating and sometimes helpless you feel but I’m here so tell you to keep trying to find different solutions. To the original poster, I hope you were able to find a solution and to anyone else who stumbles on this post, I wish you luck! Stay strong!
The Yoga Pranayam (breathing exercises) will help with tinnitus problem.Do this everyday and allow 20 weeks.Keep a journal of how you feel, as you will want to see later, how you progressed with pranayam and the side benefits you experienced.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after 1 minute.
Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose. Duration upto 5 minutes.
Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day. Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.
Anulom Vilom –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Well the tinnitus is back. I am going to have an ultrasound on my neck to rule out carotid artery stenosis. I am 30, female, young and healthy so I see no reason for this, but I'm going to pull all of my hair out!

+Hi Danuji,
I will keep you posted. watch my blog is the best thing leifandcorrinabaker.blogspot.com--http://leifandcorrinabaker.blogspot.com/2010/07/brain-surgery.html
I would highly recommend asking for referall to neurologist if you have the vascular loop which is the same thing i had. my ent said he couldn't do anything either, then the neuro surgeon met with me about five minutes and we scheduled surgery! microvascular decompression of the 7/8th cranial nerve for tinnitus.
i feel so much for you! that really *****. my problem day 8 post op is 65% better.
cheers

Congratulations! I hope for the best! If you don't mind, could you continue to update me on how its going? ^_^
I just had the same surgery for trigeminal neuralgia done on the acoustic nerve. i am on day four after brain surgery. my tinnitus is gone so far so good.
I have the exact same thing as you. My ENT also recommended me getting MRI but I can't afford it. But all the doctors I've seen say its a venous hum. Once every year I would get it for a week and take flonase and it would go away. This year I got it again around the same time, but instead of flonase my doctor prescribed nasonex. Later the doctor gave me flonase and it hasn't helped. I'm thoroughly frustrated and worn out. If you find out anything about it please let me now. I'm so sorry for you having to go through all that, but I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one out there.
