Chronic throat pain

I hope someone can offer some advice.  I have had pain in one specific spot (back of the left side of the throat, near the back of the tongue, it seems) on and off for about seven years.  About five years ago, I was treated for hyperthyroidism using 6 mcu of radioactive iodine--a successful treatment which brought thyroid hormone levels into the normal range.  At that time, I asked the doctor who treated me about this pain, and he said it was "nothing to worry about."  Years later, however, it seems to return a few times a year for weeks at a time.  My throat hurts, as well as my neck and ear on the same side, and I can feel that there is a small lump, perhaps near the back of my tongue.

One side note.  I remember that as a kid 30 years ago, I once threw a baseball from an awkward position and seemed to pull a muscle that made the exact same spot in my throat hurt terribly.  This actually happened two or three times.  It was as if the back of my tongue was being pulled.  Strange, but it's a similar feeling now.

Most likely, I will have to see a doctor about this, but I now don't have medical insurance, so I definitely hope to avoid a long expensive process.

I certainly appreciate any advice or ideas that people can give me!  Thanks.

i have had experience with sore throat but in my case it was infection on my tonsils (pus) .I had them removed 2 years ago after a really bad episode when my jaw was stiffed that I couldn't open my mouth more than  1 cm and had extreme pain on my right side of the throat ,ear and maxilar...and only the third dr taht saw me could actualy spotted what was wrong - an abces behind the right tonsil. He basically pinched it and when I saw how much pus was there I was shocked
So I am saying that someone should take a carefull look deep inside and check if your tonsils are fine ...
You say that the pain comes and go ...is there something that triggers it?
Like perheps cold drinks ?!
Or it could be a repetative truma in your throat ,as you  mentioned about baseball.
I recently discovered that a muscle trauma in my lateral thigh was actually the cause of the disconfort I have had for years and I realized it made sense as I have practising snowboard for years and have had problems with swinging my left side ,therefore I have always forcing the swing which in time caused a repetative muscle inseration trauma ...I was so reliefed to finally find the cause of my pain.
It might be possible to be something similar in your case ,just a different location
sorry for being too long with my comment...hope you'll  be well soon
