Cold Affects

I have a cold, and I've had it for about 6 days now. Is it normal for the top of your mouth to be sore if you cough a lot? Also, is it normal to have slight crackling noises in your throat after coughing? I'm only fourteen years old, and I don't smoke or drink or anything.

Yes I've seen a doctor (I went to the walk in clinic), but that was before the roof of my mouth started to hurt. I had a fever a couple times, but that was 3 days ago. I'm taking Guafenesin which has helped a lot. And yes im coughing stuff up, its usually clear or white.

I believe the answer is yes to both of your questions.  And both of those could be cause by post nasal drip (as well as the cough could be caused by this too).

The top of your mouth could also get sore if you are breathing more through your mouth rather than through your nose - because your mouth and throat would get much more dry breathing that way and that dryness alone can caus some pain to the upper part of your mouth.

Are you taking any meds for the cold?  Have you seen a doctor for it?  Are you running any fever?  Nausea?  Vomiting? Diarrhea?  When you cough, are you coughing anyhing up?  If yes, what color is it?  Clear?  White?  Green?  Yellow?  Blood tinged??

The most important thing is to stay well hydrated - really push teh liquids - if you don't feel like eating, don't worry too much about that, but it's VERY important to keep the liquids going.  Popsicles or ice pops are good, non-caffeinated soda, gatorade type drinks (or other sports drinks), and of course water.  Try to stay away from anything too acidic like orange juice (and most other fruit juices other than maybe apple) - stay away from caffeine (because it can add to dehydration) - and stay away from dairy because it can add to mucous production, making you even more congested.

Sometimes standing in a hot shower just breathign in the steam will help open up your airways and make your whole body, including your throat, feel better.  You don't even have to be IN the shower - you can just close the bathroom door and run the shower and breathe the steam tha *** creates - although you'll get better results (able to breathe more steam) if you're actually in the shower.

Also get plenty of rest.

I hope you feel better soon.
