Does swollen tonsils cause ear pain?

I moved to Denver in December of last year. I caught a really bad cold that went to my sinuses just after getting here. I was on antibiotics for a few weeks and then started having allergies. My throat was infected a few times, but I have had this constant ear pain. I went to like 4 different ENT's and finally got tubes in my ears because of the fluid buildup. This was done last May. I still have a swollen throat and constant ear pain though. I have no infection that I know of though. The last ENT said that he would remove my tonsils if I wanted, but I refused because of the recovery. My throat is always tight and my ears always feel full. Has anyone suffered from this? Should I just get my tonsils out? I am 33 with 3 kids and am scared of the recovery.

Thanks!!!

Hi,

Fungal infection in the ear could be due to the discharge which comes out of the tube and remaining in the canal. There is no specific test which can identify the fungal infection in the ear. However if you happen to get a swab taken from the particular site and sent for KOH mount probably they will be able to identify the fungal growth.

I was reading in this forum about fungal ear infections. After getting the tubes in my ears I started a candida free diet and was put on nystatin orally. This actually made my ears feel better. Is there a way to test for this too? Maybe I could eliminate this before taking out the tonsils.

Hi,

If you are suffering from recurrent throat pain and difficulty in swallowing, it is wise enough to get rid of your tonsils. If not, better not to meddle with it. There are plenty of reasons for you to get an earache of which sinusitis and tonsillitis are a few. Reason being eustachian tube blockage due to former reason and common nerve supply will cause the earache during an attack of tonsillitis.
