Ear ringing and crackling

My left ear started ringing in Feb. At first is was mild and I thought it was a reaction to a recent new perscription, so I stopped the rx and it's still ringing.  I had a MRI in early Feb for facial tingling on my left side. The MRI was normal.  I went back to dr for my yearly checkup on 3/15 and dr said me ears were infection and was given Nasacort and Levequin.  After two weeks, it was still ringing, so I went to see and ENT.  He checked ears and there's no build up or infection.  Hearing test was w/in normal range too, but left ear did show high pitch frequency loss. Anyway, his diagnosis is TMJ and he prescribed 500mg anti-inflammatory, mouth guard, warm presses, soft diet and no gum. I tried these and nothing is working, however, I cannot seem to get the OTC mouth guards to fit properly so I'm going to the dentist next week for a custom fit one.

In addition to the ringing, about 3 weeks ago my ears started popping.  Both ears are doing it however the left is worse. Everytime I swallow, twitch may nose or open my mouth it does this.  It's driving me insane.  I sounds like my joints are ripping apart!  Anyone else every experience this w/TMJ?  Is it really TMJ or are my bones softening up! (:  I have been under a lot of stress lately so I do catch myself with a tight jaw bite, perhaps I am doing this in my sleep....that's when I can sleep because of the constanst ringing. Any suggestions on coping with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sharon

My husband suffered from sound and pressure evoked dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, tinnutis (sp??), hearing his voice, heartbeat, eye movements, conductive hearing loss & nausea for over 20 years. We finally found Dr. Carey at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore who diagnosed him with superior canal dehisence, a rather recently discovered condition and was able to cure him. It required inner-cranial surgery, but only 1 week after later he is well on his way to being cured. Dr. Carey performed the same tests that has been done repeatedly, but he knows what he is looking for!  Not only is he the greatest doctor we ever met, he is one of the kindest also. I am not a health professional, I just want to tell everyone who may have this condition about our experiences. http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/otolaryngology/carey.html

Was contrast used with your MRI... (an injection) if not the MRI was useless.

I have the same issues- I can deal with the sound during the day- but at night it's really tough. I recently bought a sound therapy system at Brookstones. It was $100- but it really helps me sleep better! It called "Tranquil Moments" Try the summer night setting,
You have nother to lose- return it if it doesn't help you!

I don't get the ringing but I get a static type noise in my right ear that is noise induced such as if my dog barks or if I put headphones on. Drives me nuts. Doctors don't seem to help at all. Hearing is fine. I do clench my teeth when I sleep. Now I've been noticing that if I get upset I feel a fullness or something in that ear and it can start to crackle. Maybe a neurologist should be seen in my case and yours too.

Good luck.

You can use a fan or noise machine to create "white noise" to drown out the ringing. Keep onto the dr's to help you and best wishes.
