ringing ears

I have ringing in my ears and I am losing my hearing. This has been going on for about three months.I have seen a doctor a couple of times and he tells me there is nothing that can be done. He says that no surgery will help, only that hearing aids might limit the noise. My insurance will not cover hearing aids and this ringing is driving me crazy. Is my doctor telling me the truth. Is there a possibilty that surgery will stop this ringing? thank-you

Nancy right, One thing you might try for immediate relief is playing therapeutic music especially at night. Sounds like tinnitus but there are many ways to treat it. Inner ear infections could cause this. A sure sign of middle ear infection would be irritation or fullness along with ringing. I would get a second opinion from an audiologist if your doctor says he can't do anything. There are many successful medications for treating severe tinnitus. Best wishes.

Hopefully you have seen an ear specialist. Do they know the cause of your hearing loss?

Surgery cannot treat tinnitus per se. There are a few ear conditions where surgery is done, but it doesn't sound like you have any of them if you've seen a specialist and been told that surgery won't help.

That doesn't mean there's no treatment for hearing loss and tinnitus. The treatment depends on the cause. For tinnitus there are medications that might help the tinnitus bother you less, there are masking devices, etc. Let your doctor know how the tinnitus is affecting you and ask what you can do. Good luck!
