wake up at night while choking

Over the past couple of weeks i have started to wake suddenly while choking, really choking' like breathing in fluid.
This is very alarming and has nearly made me vomit, it doesn't matter if i'm on my side or on my back. I have always been unable to sleep on my back as i would normally wake gasping for air!!
could someone please give me any idea's

PS. I may also have MS, this is condition is being looked into.

Limit the caffeine, the spicy foods and alcohol.  Easier said than done; I love coffee myself.  I have had the same thing in the past, but it would come and go.  It was worse when I was stressed.  I take Prevacid as needed; my physician said that was ok.

Do not eat 3 hours before going to bed.

Your physician may have to increase your medication and/or order an Upper Endo.  If it persists, consult him/her.

Oh yes, there is a connection.  This is your GERD/Reflux causing the problem.

What is your diet like during the day (greasy or spicy food)?  Are you eating big meals? Are you eating close to bedtime?  Alcohol or coffee drinker?  Overweight?

If this persists, I would recommend getting an Upper Endoscopy done so the physician can visually see your esophagus, stomach and part of the small intestine

I do have to take lansoprazole for the rest of my life, i started taking it while i was taking diclophenic' years ago. even though i no longer take diclophenic my body has grown acustom to Lansoprazole. if i don't take one every day i get raging heartburn. do you think that there could be a connection?

What is your medical history?  Any history of GERD/acid reflux?

Hi,

What you are describing sounds like something called 'sleep apnea'. It is a pretty common problem but can give a variety of problems like headaches, waking up exhausted etc. With the right material it can be resolved pretty easily.

More info here on Wikipedia:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea

I hope this helps you, best of luck.

Steven
