I need help gaining weight and keeping it.

I'm a recovering Bulimic via binge and starve. My weight hovers between 95 and 100 pounds, and I would like to gain at least five more pounds. Most of the weight I gain goes into my stomach, thighs, and butt leaving my arms thin. I have a very fast metabolism and have a lot of food allergies. I have trouble keeping my weight up, and would like to know if there is a special diet I can go on to help gain five pounds and keep my weight up. Keeping in mind I'm only five feet tall so 105 should be a heathy weight.

Any tips or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi
I'm sorry your weight gain hasn't gone as well as you would have liked.
The doctor is right, if you put more energy in than you burn off you will gain weight.

Perhaps the caloric density of the food you eat isn't that high.  You could be eating a lot of food but consuming very few calories.

It must be difficult trying to manage your weight with food allergies.

I've been watching this program called Super size Super skinny.  It has one very large person and one very tiny person.  They exchange diets for a week.  It doesn't show how much either gains or loses in that week but it's quite interesting how it forces them to focus on their eating behaviors.
After they have completed the diet swap for a week they are given 12 week plans to take home.
At the end of the 12 weeks neither seems to have lost or gained a huge amount of weight (-2+ stone/ +2+ lb) but they have made gains towards becoming healthier people.  I think it is about making healthy lifestyle changes and not about quick fixes (which inevitably fail).
[I think I need to re-frame my thinking about how much and how quickly is healthy and safe]

Did you get nutritional support for the bulimia?  Or just psychological support?  Or neither.

I guess exercises to tone your problem areas and resistance exercises to bulk up your arms would work.

It sounds like you may have had some bad experiences with doctors.
If there is something wrong, isn't it better that it be caught early?
(I think I've interpreted what you've written to mean you think there may be something wrong vs nutritionist/ trainer).

While I was waiting at the hospital today (I've been attending a wound clinic after I got an infection following surgery) I was reading this pamphlet about hepatitis C.  It said many people didn't know they had it until many years later.  It said many people could have had a better quality life if it were picked up sooner.  Food for thought.

I think procrastinating actually creates more stress.
I was extremely stressed about my teeth for ages and put off going to the dentist.  I finally found a good one, one I was comfortable with, and I'm fine going now -kind of.

One of the psychologists I've seen in the past said procrastinating was a bit like putting cats in the basement -they breed.

Could you take a support person with you to the doctor if that helps?
How about you just do it -make the appointment and go.  Often the thoughts are worse than the experience itself.
(Dietitians and trainers aren't necessarily doctors.  I'm a bit confused now.)

I agree it is a waste no to use this site to it's full potential.

My weight gain has been shaky. When I first signed up for the site I was 95 pounds, and went up to 99 within the week and am now back down to 94. Even though I seem to eat a lot I can't keep my weight up. I'm trying these protein drinks that are supposed to help you gain weight but I haven't seen a difference in a week. I'm going to continue to drink them and hope to see a change but I'm not holding my breath. I might just have to do as the good doctor said and see a nutritionist and a weight trainer, but I dread going to doctors and have anxiety attacks whenever I go. I can't help but fear they're going to find something else that's wrong. I know it's pathetic and they can help me but I just get so scared of going I always cancel or don't go at all.

any diet you can tolerate will work if you eat enough.  the distribution of weight on your body is genetically determined, but can be somewhat modified by exercise.  You are best seeing a nutritionist and a trainer for this..

Hi.
I'm sorry your question has been overlooked.
I'm not the best person to be answering your question, but I hope someone will.

I was actually just wondering about questions that could be asked to stimulate conversation.
This is an awesome resource and for people not to utilize it, seems a waste/ shame.

How has your weight gain been going over the past week and a bit?
