The name is Pica and is a disorder in which a person has a strong desire to eat, lick, or chew non-food items. These items consist of dirt, paint chips, rust, glue, fingernails, hair, chalk, starch, cigarette ashes and clay. This disorder is common is pregnant women, small children, people with mineral deficiencies and those in developing countries who may not get enough to eat.
If you are craving odd things during pregnancy (i.e. paper, detergent, dirt) it means your body is lacking something. Go to the dr. and have your blood tested.
First of all: You're not mad! Now what I ate when I was pregnant wasn't paper - I had to drink orange juice after brushing my teeth. Couldn't stand the taste of oranges alone, but loved the combination.
It is interesting how we crave for things and how stilling the craving only seems to be possible with that one thing. I think that I'd have looked into how others break cravings. Sugar and carbs as an example can only be broken by going through the withdrawal. I wonder if that's the only way to break this craving too.
I hope that I don't sound horrible when I say that you might have to find a substitute to break this. I know a lot of people who get addicted to toothsticks. They can't stop chewing them, and they would always have one extra to offer. Have you tried this?
