Endometriosis, migraine and the pill

Hi,

I was diagnosed with endometriosis two years ago and have since been through two laparoscopies as well as a three month induced menopause. After the last laparoscopy the doctor told me that the endo. was gone and put me on the pill as a prevenative measure. However, the pill really exacerabated my migraines and made me quite depressed so I stopped taking it. Immediately after, the frequency of my migraines lessened but since, the frequency has increased greatly. I am now worried that this may be a sign that the endo. has returned. What makes this difficult to determine, is the fact that even after I was diagnosed I had very few, if any, symptoms. My questions are; could there be a correlation between eno and migraine frequency, since I have never really had any symptoms anyway, how can I be sure that has returned or not?

I have heard so many bad things about Yasmin.  I have also heard of the pill causing those symptoms as well so I am wondering if its just the pill itself.  I take Marvelon21 and have since my surgery 4yrs ago.  I am wondering if its the ingredients in the yasmin that could be doing it besides the progestin and estrogen? Where you taking it continuously with the yasmin 21 or the 28 day?

MARVELON21 contains the below ingredients

Each white, round tablet contains desogestrel 0.15 mg and ethinyl estradiol 0.03 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose, polyethylene glycol, povidone, starch, stearic acid, talc, titanium dioxide and vitamin E.

YASMIN 21
Each hormone-containing yellow, round, film-coated tablet contains 3.0 mg drospirenone and 0.030 mg ethinyl estradiol. Nonmedicinal ingredients: cornstarch, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, modified starch, polyethylene glycol, povidone, talc, titanium dioxide, and yellow ferric oxide.

When looking at the pills to see the difference, I see that you are taking 3.0mg of progestin where I am taking 0.15mg.  Maybe there is too much of that?

I agree some people either have a great effect with the BCP and some people the opposite.  It works wonders for my migraines but for my sister it makes them worse. She doesnt have endo but she does have thyroid issues

I cannot have any sort of birth control pill because of migraines. I already have them, but the pill sent them through the roof and I had them 24/7 w/o any break. Thankfully once I told my doctor who treats my endo, he immediately took me off b.c.

Also as far as migraines I have many triggers: gluten (wheat, barley, rye), dairy, certain nuts, any artificial sweeteners, msg (umami), high fructose corn syrup (corn sugar), nitrates/nitrites, limit my caffine, and sodium laural(th) sulfate-- check any med because this is in alot of different meds, it is also a main ingredient in soap/detergent. So if you have not, you might want to keep a food dairy and read the ingredients in your soap/detergent.

I hope this helps,

Hi Ticked,

Thanks yet again for your swift and helpful reply. I hope that it is the pill and I can go on a better one to solve my problem!  I just took the time to read your details and empathise with the trouble and worry that endo. has caused you, especially from such a young age. Although, I have been lucky enough not to have suffered consistant pain (which I think is unusual). However, this adds to my worry because without pain I can't really know whether I have it or not! Since I have been experiencing bloating and the odd twinge lately along with the migraines I have decided to go back to my consultant on the 28th of this month.

Hi Ticked,

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I was on Yasmin which my doctor told me was a mild pill. Before I went on the pill I occasionally got migraines which I attributed mainly to stress, while having endo. Then on the pill my migraines and worsened considerable and I got very depressed. Now  that I am off the pill I still get migraines quite often but the depression has lifted. I never really had any of the usual endo symptoms so I wonder if the migraine is a symptom?

Yes there could be a correlation as I used to have Chronic Miagraines before I was on the pill. Now I am on a low dose pill called Marvelon and have only had 1 miagraine in 4 yrs.

I am sure I am estrogen dominant and you could be as well.

What pill were you on?
