Excercise question - duhhhh....

Hi Forum members!
I am about 25 pounds overweight (age 44, 175# - 5'7") and a recent diabetic diagnossie.
I started my Time Life "The Firm" videos again this wee because Doc says I have to excrcise for an hour a day.
I KNOW those vidoes work, cuz I used them way back in 1997 (or so) when I used to be thin (age 34, 126# - 5'8").
So here is my question.......
because I am overweight and larger, will this exercise build my muscles large like the size my legs are? Or will it slim them down, loose inches as it tightens muscles?
I dont want to be buff - just tone.
Input anyone?

Hi again,
I studied a bit of nutrition while in Uni studying Kinesiology.  I'm sure that you already know all about eating low GI foods.  How high GI foods cause spikes and crashes in blood sugar, and how it cause you to store more fat.  My friend is involved with Usana.  They have great low GI drinks and bars.  Their vitamins are actually listed in the Physician's desk reference.  She's a Kinesiologist too.  Her site is www.nutriceuticals.usana.com if you wanna have a look.
JerseyBoy, it might be useful for your clients too.
And, fyi...I had more nutritional training in my degree than what doctors get.  So, unless your Dr has a personal interest in it, they may not have all the info you need.
Keep on investigating!!
Here's a good site about food...  www.whfoods.com  Great info.
All the best, everyone!

hey wat's up,
hope you are well.  CONGRATULATIONS on your results! im glad to hear the hard work is paying off.  You should reach your goal in no time!  As for your daughter, i know exactly what you mean when  you say muffin top belly, lol.  That's one of the hardest things to get rid of even if you do sit ups everyday.  the best thing to get rid of that is tough aerobic exercise, like what you're doing, or running (the most effective aerobic exercise of them all).  Also, let her know that the key to getting and staying fit, when not exercising, is to stay as active as possible, especially after eating.  A great start for her would be to take 10 minute walks after meals.  This actually makes a big difference and helps lose some fat.  That's why there are people who seem to eat all kinds of junk yet never seem to get fat.  Chances are, they are pretty active and move around quite a bit in their daily lives.  I hope that helps her out.  :o)  anyway, before I ramble on again and write another book, lol, I'll leave you by saying keep it up and I hope you and your family are well.  By the way, i'm a personal trainer, so if you ever have more questions regarding exercising and physical training, please feel free to email me anytime.
my email is alex0101_01***@****    I know a thing or two about diet and nutrition as well, but I don't know much about what those with diabetes can or cannot eat, so I don't want to risk giving bad advice to you in that area. Your doctor would be the best person to see regarding that.
Take Care!!

Hey thanks for the prp talk!
I am still working out with the tapes. In fact I ordered 4 more from ebay that I did not have in the set - more toning tapes. So far so good. The pants that were very tight now are getting baggy, YAHEWIE!
I want to get back to my target weight and in a bikini for my 20th Anniversary next year in Hawaii. I also am hoping that my overweight, lazy 23 year old daughter will get see the results and start working out. She has two kids (2 and 4) and needs to get rid of her Muffin top belly. I was really lucky with loosing weight after my kids (now 23 and 13). I am very careful with my food and what I eat, I am diabetic.
Have a great day!

hey,
I hope your exercising is paying off.   I also am not familiar with The Firm videos but i assume they're exersise tapes with aerobic exercises, music, and the occasional dumbbell exercise, right?  If so, and it's your legs that  your worried about, I wouldn't worry.  If it's this type of workout you're doing, it's great for the legs.  Muscle training, with no aerobics in it, unfortunately does not burn fat the way people think.  Any aerobic exercise that really makes your heart pump and makes you sweat is great for burning fat, and of course will exercise whatever muscles are targeted in the motions. The key to sexy legs is little fat and good muscle tone.   One thing that many people don't know is that ONLY if you work out with HEAVY weights and do few repetitions does it build bulky muscle.  Working with light weights and doing 12+ reps like the above guy said will only tone the muscles and make them look nice and cut, not large.  However, aerobic exersises like they have in videos will pose no danger of large muscles.  Concerning weights, any weight that you can't lift more than 12 times with perfect form and motion, might be a little too heavy.  LIGHTWEIGHTS and AEROBICS is the key to toned muscles and fat burning.  Also, try to be active after you eat, since the activity and movement helps speed metabolism and prevents carbs and sugars from turning into stored fat.  Don't finish eating a meal and sit watching tv for an hour or more.  not good.  Well, I hope this helped you and I hope I didn't sound condescending in anyway.  I just want to help.  Good luck, and no matter how slow the results seem to come, don't give up!!!

Thanks for your reply. I have been doing the tapes 3 times a week for the last 3 weeks and I am thinning a little and some weight loss. These vids are the best! They use areobic and exercise together and really tone and firm.
Thanks for your reply~

Hi there,
I am not familiar with "The Firm" videos.
What I can tell you is that high repetitions of 12+ (15, 20 reps) will not build a substantial amount of muscle.  Lower reps cause the stimulus for muscular hypertrophy - 6-10 reps.  Of course, there will be a bit of training of either system - a cross over effect.
Also, free weights are much better at building muscle and bone density than other resistance exercises.
Not exactly the answer you're looking for, but I hope it helps a bit.
