Osteochondritis Dissecans

Hi I am a 30 yr old very active male; I was diagnosed with Osteochondritis Dissecans in my right knee with a focal cartilaginous defect within the posterior weightbearing 3rd of the lateral femoral condyle.  The lesion is 1.7cm in anterior -posterior dimension x 0.7cm in transverse dimension.  My doctor has recomended 4 weeks of swimming/upper body exercise only and then gradually resume normal activity( I had stayed off it for the initial 3 weeks following the injury and resumed light activity for 2 weeks prior to MRI and my condition is unchanged).  My concern is that being a grade 3 lesion and being a grown adult there is a little chance of this repairing itself and I should opt for surgery.  Any opinions?

Dr. Alfred J. Tria Jr., MD He is the best! I've seen him on CBS New a few times. Just see him even for a second opinion. He's located in Somerset.

Thanks for the reply.  I am in NJ but I'm currently seeing an OS in NYC.  From what I've read that seems to be the case.  I'm going to stay off of it for a couple weeks and touch base with him then.  I'm starting to feel more popping and clicking as the days go by.  If you don't mind, who is the OS you used?  My father could use a knee replacement or two.

From what I know of OD at your age only surgery will help! I've had both knees
replaced not because of OD. You didn't state your location but I had one of the
best orthopedic surgeons in New Jersey.
