Sprained Ankle

I was recently diagnosed with a severe sprained ankle.  I was playing basketball when I stepped on another players foot.  My foot started to roll in, then he tried to remove his foot, and then it rolled out.  I heard a loud crack and it instantly swelled up the size of a grapfruit.  The swelling has gone down but there is a constant pain on the level of 3-4, sometimes less.  Most importantly there is a burning pain directly on the outside of my ankle when I stand.  It is gets releaved for the most part when elevate but not completely.  What am I experiencing? What can I expect healing wise?

Are you wrapping it to support it? that can help. A bad sprain can take up to six weeks to heal. As far as the progression of the healing, what you will notice is that the swelling slowly goes down as well as the pain level. You may want to have a follow up x-ray done in a couple of weeks.

First you should have an X-ray taken! You should have iced the ankle ASAP.
Get the X-ray.
