Swollen middle knuckle

About a month ago I punched a hard surface with my right hand. The knuckle of my middle finger swelled up quite a bit and has not gone down at all since. I have full range of motion and can use it perfectly fine. The right side of the knuckle is constantly swollen, and the rest swells back up if i rub my hand against anything. Will this go away?

i had a total middle knuckle replacement on my right hand the knuckle that forms a fist, i had more range of motion with my old arthritis knuckle that i was born with, i will not never ever have another knuckle replacement i will keep the joints i was born with , i would rather have them because they have more range of motion and the silicone knuckle only provided 45 degrees of motion, if you go beyond that it will break, I regret having this operation, because i was better off with the knuckle i was born with, i would rather take a few Alieves than to have this junk in my hand. I feel so defenseless, i will lose if i ever get in a fight or a wrench slips and breaks this cheap piece of plastic silicone.

i've been punching walls not to hard maybe just like a tap  4 about a year and i did it because not because i have anger problems i just thought itll make my knuckle stronger, well i been noticing that my right middle knuckle had be getting bigger, so  i thought  its working then igot in to a fight  later on my right knuckle started to swel up it hurted  a little bit but not to much just when u presss it hard  then in about a week the swelling started going down but i noticed that my middle knuckle is even bigger! then i got scared. then one day i tried playing basket ball but every time tried to shoot my mid knukles  would hurt  like i cannt throw any thing. then 2 weeks later i went to my doctor they took an x-ray and nothing is broken or fractured  my doctor said something about its my "tendon" the tissue on top of my bones , it looks like my bone slid up or something but she says its not my bone. i ask hr is it going to go back to normal? she says itll take time but now its been a month or more it still hurs everytime i try to move my middle finger (knuckle).i triedputting ice and creams but nothings happening!! what should i do!??

Hi,

Please try and rest the injured part. Also OTC painkillers will help in reducing pain and swelling. Icepacks will also help. If it still hurts please see a doctor as you may have fractured your middle finger.

Hi,

It seems for your post that this was not painful at any point of time. However, please tell me if this is/was tender at any time. Further, was there any other injury, bruising at the site?

It appears that you have injured the capsule of the joint between the two parts of a finger. The capsule is protective of the movements and contains synovial fluid which provides lubrication to the joints and helps them glide over each other.

This fluid is probably stretching some part of the capsule of the ligament and causing the swelling.

I think it is essential that you reach out to your doctor and he examines you as this may have potential for further damage in spite of there being no pain. Further till the time your doctor examines it, you should not do any experimentations. Best would be to keep the finger still and at one position to help the healing.

Keep me posted and let me know if you need more information.

Best regards
