Tendor or Ligament on back of knee popping

31 year old avid male competitive runner. Overall good health, no major mechanical issues.

Right, backside of left knee "pops" much like knuckles intermittently. General area is where the ligament can be felt when knee is flexed.

Can not be produced on demand, just all of the sudden happens.

Does not happen while walking, climbing stairs or even exercising on elliptical machine, only when running.

Does not produce pain just annoyance that halts the running.

Started as every now only when running. Progressed to now occurring within first 1/2 mile and continues.

Stopped all running activity 3 weeks ago to try and resolve. Tried again yesterday and it happened within

Sounds like an inflamed ligament. You will probably need to take six weeks off and then start slowly. Short runs, ice and rest. Start with a couple of days between runs, then one day. Allow yourself the day off as you slowly increase the mileage. You may have some residual clicking but it shouldn't hurt or interfere with your funning.
Hope it feels better.
