broken foot exercising

Have been walking (about 4 mph) 3-5 miles a day the past 3 months. I love it. Recently, 4 weeks ago. broke my left calcaneus (heel) and I miss all the excellent benefits of daily walking. My doctor suggests stationary cycling (sounds boring-I enjoy the outdoors too much). Are there any other benefical exercises for a non weight bearing injury such as mine? Possibly outside? Thanks!
