How do I motivate my partner?

Hello Board!

I wanted to know how I can motivate my partner to become more interested in exercise, fitness, and overall health? He's overweight and not very active. He makes poor choices with foods (big portions, fast food, no veggies/fruits). How do I help get him motivated to be a healthier man? I feel that fitness is self-motivating for a lot of people, and I just don't see him self-motivated to be a healthier person. I go to the gym on average 4 days a week, and I maintain a healthy diet. I'm in relatively good shape. When I try to help him he gets defensive and irritated. I'm not critical by any means, but I do try to lead him towards healthier choices. Any suggestions on how to get this man self-motivated? Thank you!

It's all up to him! He has to want to do it! Has he been to the doctor for a checkup?

He has been to the doctor for routine checkups throughout the years, everything comes back as fine and healthy EXCEPT his weight! I was just hoping for some good tips that I could use to help the motivation process. I totally agree, though...he needs to want this for himself, I can't do it for him! But, I do want to be supportive and encourage him to be healthier and to take pride in his body! You only get one, afterall!

You said "everything comes back as fine and healthy EXCEPT his weight!"
By any chance are you in the room when the doctor said everything is OK?
Do you get to see his test results?

Hi there!

It is true that motivation should come from within. It is never a good idea to constantly nag someone about losing weight or even constantly discuss the topic, since this make then defensive. The best way to get one motivated to exercise it to begin with some fun outdoor activities like you could go on a biking trip or a beach for swimming. Get him involved with people who are into fitness, introduce them as friends and not strangers and then gradually build up the motivation, without making him feel that it is a deliberate effort.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
