Tegu paralyzed tongue

Tegu has a paralyzed tongue, it's become a problem with eating almost making it impossible. His tongue curves back into his throat, he can still move it a little but only the first 1/3, his tongue never flicks out of his mouth. Talked to a vet a while back about it, they suggested amputation.  Is amputation the best option or is there anything else I could do?
