Some kind of Growth under my eyelid

I am a 28 year old male in generally good health.  I was notching out a board for my roof overhang when i got sawdust in my eyes.  I rubbed it and washed it out and seemed to be fine.  My right eye became very red and irritated and started to discharge and was forming a crust on my eye at night.  This went on for 3 or 4 days and stopped. a couple days later it started back up and i went to the eye doctor.  The doctor said she opened the top of my eyelid and there was some kind of growth that she had never seen before.  She said it was a mushroom shaped growth that was connected to the top of my eyelid fairly deep ( meaning further up from the opening where the eyelashes are).  She refered me to an eye surgeon to get an opinion and to have it removed for a biopsy.  The one thing i forgot to tell her is that i have noticed it and it has been there to my knowledge of about 3 months or so.  Also i didnt tell her is that i have had 2 or 3 styes in the last 1/2 year or so, which i have never had one before.  I didnt mention this cuz i didnt think it had anything to do with it, until reading up on this and noticing that styes can lead to other problems.  Does anyone know what this might be?  I am trying to get some answers before i go to the surgeon.  I dont have medical insurance and dont want to go spend hundreds or thousands of dollars if it is nothing.

I went to an opthamologist and he thought that it was a wound and instead of growing (fusing) back together that it grew outward.  He prescribed me Teradox (i think thats what it was called)a steroid eye drop and told me to put that in for a couple weeks.  I did and then went back and it is now just a little knot type thing.  He said to continue using it for 2 or 3 more weeks  and just let it be. He said it may completely go away or it might not.  But he said it shouldnt grow anymore or irritate me. He said if it does come back, then he'll cut it out.  That was an option from the get go, but he suggested using the eye drops first.

Did you have trauma or get something in your eye that may have caused it?

Just wondering how everything turned out, if at all, because I have the same problem and just discovered it today. I looked up information on sties and chalazions and you're right, it looks nothing like either of them. It's not focused around the edge of the eyelid near the lashes, it's way back there. If I touch the outside of my upper eyelid I can feel the lump(s) as opposed to my other eye, which has none. I'm not bold enough to turn my lid inside out, but I can see it when I lift it. I'm also a contact lens wearer, which obviously puts me at risk for a battery of eye problems, but I wonder if it has anything to do with it. I've been experiencing the same kind of thick discharge that blurs my vision, which makes me want to remove it but only worsens the irritation. Please keep me posted whether you found out what it is and what the treatment is for something as strange and troublesome as this. I'd appreciate it. Thanks =0)

I havent been using it much lately, the redness has cleared up and now feels fine

visine is only designed for use of 10 days or less.  its a potent vasoconstrictor which pretty much causes low blood flow to the limbus of your eye, which over time can and does cause CORNEAL EXHAUSTION SYNDROME.  pretty much can ruin your cornea if used chronically.  OCCASIONAL USE for up to 10 days is fine.  but not chronic use.

besides, it just masks your symptoms anyway.  it doesnt "fix" anything.  it just makes your eye temporarily not as red.

ive seen pictures of Chalzions and the pictures dont look like what i have.   This is on the inside of my eyelid and you cant tell its there.  its not really hard either, looks like a piece of skin.  Last night I inverted my eyelid to take a look at it and when i touched it, some white puss or fluid (not gonna say pusss like a zit) came out, kinda like the fluid that sometimes you wipe off the corner of your eye, (or similar to what you see on the outside of a dogs eye).  I have been using Visine about Once every couple hours or so and the redness has cleared up and it seems fine...just dont know about this piece of skin deal....Im hopin its just a chalzion

I'm confused. Was your post in reply to mine, directly above yours? I did not say I had mine "scraped off." I did have chalazions. The doctor inverted my eyelid, numbed the area, excised the chalazion and removed the material that was inside it. A patch was placed over my eye and I was given a prescription for antibiotic ointment. Same procedure each time I had one removed.

um, i would hope no health care professional would ever try to "scrape" a chalazion "off".  i personally kind of doubt it was/is a chalazion or sty, etc, b/c those are not usually "scraped".  you either treat them with medications (oral and/or topical) or you have them surgically excised (which is certainly different from a "scaping")

It's hard to know for sure from your description, but it sounds like it may be a chalazion, which is a lump in the eyelid caused by inflammation of a gland. The gland involved is a modified sweat gland that produces oil. When this gland becomes blocked, it can rupture and the inflammation process starts. I've had several of these in the past. They weren't painful or red (although they can be), just small, hard, round lumps in my upper eyelid. In the early stages, a chalazion can be treated at home with the use of warm compresses for about 15 minutes followed by several minutes of light lid massage. If this doesn't reduce the size of the chalazion, a trip to th doctor may be necessary for draining, a fairly simple procedure.

Thanks for the reply, yeah i would be more than happy to pay even $100-$200 per month, but if they charge me $2500 and expect me to pay it all that day, well that i cant do and it sounds like thats what they want me to do...then if we find out its cancer or something. then what

If you can't pay it all at once, ask them to arrange a payment plan. If you can manage 25 or $50 per month, you will get it paid off eventually (even just taking a bag lunch to work rather than eating out, if you don't already do that, can save a lot). Good luck.

If i have it removed and a biopsy done, How much does something like this cost?  They told me its going to be $275 for just the visit. If they have to do tests, ect. its going to be more and i have to pay on that day.  I only have about $600 i can pay.

um, that is definitely not "nothing".  you need to have that removed.  i dont know what that is, but no "growth" under your eyelid is normal.  i would definitely consider that ABNORMAL.  have it evaluated by a surgeon for biopsy/removal.
