9 year-old boy with astigmatism, required to wear glasses?

Good day!

My 9-year old son was diagnosed (by an Opthalmologist) as having these eye grades: LEFT EYE +1.00-0.75X170
RIGHT EYE +1.25-0.75X24. Does he really need glasses? Is it true that his grades will go up once he wears glasses? Thank you in advance.

That's a low prescription assuming he was checked by a competent doctor with dilation before being refracted.  Kids tend to overaccomodate and his real prescription may be greater if he was checked the same way as an adult.  A sign of this may be that he gets headaches.  If he hasn't, have him see a pediatric ophthalmologist who can perform a cycloplegic refraction and confirm the full strenght of his prescription.  If the above numbers are correct, he may be able to get by without glasses as long as he doesn't sit too far from the board.  Should not be affecting his grades.

Yes, he was dilated before he was refracted. He had a headache whole saturday and he vomited thrice, so we brought him the following day to the Opthalmologist. Since we knew of his eye conditions, we prevented him from using our computer and tv.

Thank you doctor for you response, I am deeply grateful and I am relieved that my son's eye condition is not as grave as i perceived it was.
