A huge NIH study AREDS-2 is underway but won't conclude for several years. It's looking at whether taking a multivitamen plus lutein/omega 3 will prevent age related macular degeneration from developing. AREDS-1 showed that for people with dry macular age degeneration that a multivitamen plus Vit A,C,E, zinc, copper slowed the progression of dry ARMD.

My optometrist and retinologist would disagree with you. The first recommended lutein and zeaxanthin for general eye health, and the second recommended saffron for macular degeneration.
No special supplement is needed for eye unless you have some retina problem, also taking too much supplement too is also toxic.
Would it be beneficial to take one 6 mg Lutein each day?
