I know this is a old thread but I had a DCR a week ago and it hasn't stopped tearing since, is this normal or will I have to wait for it to settle down?
It's now worse than it was before!
I had DCR surgery on my left eye in 2003 and then in my right eye in 2006. For the most part both were fine except for summer allergy season. Over the years I have had them flushed out and sometimes it helps, but most of the time it doesn't. I'm trying some steroid drops now and hoping it helps to drain a little bit more of the river out of my eye. I was hoping I could have the surgery redone with a larger passage way, but apparently I have a very thick bone on the eye that is worse and the doctor can't say if it would be better, it could get worse or maybe not change at all. It's all very frustrating to me also and I don't know what else to try. If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.
I've had a DCR operation, it has failed, in fact my eye waters more one than before the operation, I had the tube in my eye for 4 months, the watering was horrendous then, but I kept thinking that when the tube comes out the tears will have a new channel to drain away.....wishful thinking. I feel suicidal over the outcome, I can't see properly cos I've always got tears in my eyes so my vision is blurred, ive constantly got tissues to wipe my eyes. The tube has been out 6 weeks and I went back to see my consultant on Thursday, now I've got to have a scan on my head to see what's going on. I wish I'd never had this operation cos my eyes are worse now than before.
I'm not an eye care professional. To the best of my knowledge, most people do continue to tear until the stents are removed. With the stents in place, your tear duct cannot close up, but the stents do take up room. There are a couple of women who have posted journals about their recovery from DCR surgery--try googling. (For whatever reason, I'm not able to send you a private message with the links--which can't be posted on this site.)
I really hope your surgery is successful. Your surgeon is your best source of information.
I do still have stents in my eye, but I wasn't tearing for the first 5-7 days. Does this mean I'm not healing right and things have closed up? Or do some people continue to tear until the stents are removed? (It's not the dry eye and reflex tearing as drops do not escape now where they did post surgery).
I'm hoping when the stent is removed there will be just the "right" amount of room for tears to escape. With my severe dry eye, a little blockage for the end result would be nice. That is how my left eye is. You can irrigate the lower well and upper partially but can't get past either at the common canaliculus with the probe. It works great for me.
If you still have stents in your eye, that could be the cause of your tearing. Usually stents are not removed until a few months after surgery.
I think that you will have to wait and see how things turn out. If your tearing does not resolve, I suggest that you consult 2-3 oculoplastic surgeons for recommendations before proceeding. In this case, possibilities would include revision DCR (perhaps endoscopic) or CDCR with a Jones tube. Jones tube surgery frequently involves complications, so be sure that you understand the risks before choosing this option. Botox injected into the lacrimal gland is another possibility for controlling a teary eye, but I don't know whether your health insurance would pay for this.
