Astigmatism (double vision?)

Hello,

I work a lot using a computer. Especially lately, until I have noticed a weird thing. We had a full moon and it looked really weird to me. It would appear that there is a ghost image of it just a little above it.

I did some googling and tried a simple test suggested online. I've made a small pinhole using a business card and have looked thru it and the ghosting image of the Moon disappeared. I've noticed I see such a ghosting image only attached to bright sources of light or at least wherever there is contrast. Like, when I read white letters on black background.

The LED lamp on my PC speakers I almost completely see doubled. Again, using a pinhole everything looks just right.

Here is an illustration to that phenomenon:
http://img300.yfrog.com/i/eyep.jpg/

So, I went to an ophthalmologist. They did check my eyes and did some simple computer eye test. Here are the results:
Right eye:
Sphere +0.00, Cylinder +1.00, Axis 85

Left eye
Sphere +0.75, Cylinder -1.00, Axis 8

The doctor said I had astigmatism and need glasses, so they've prescribed a pair of glasses:
Left/Right eye: Cylinder +0.50, Axis 90

I've got the glasses today and am wearing them for a few hours already and that 'effect' that I used to see when reading light color letters on dark background, has almost disappeared altho I feel it shows up sometimes.

However, there is no difference when I look at the green LED. There is no difference when I look at bright lamps in the night. I see a ghost image just above them.

What should I do? Do the eyes need some time to adapt to glasses? Or is what I'm having something else?
Again, when I use a pinhole (with or without glasses on), I see everything just right.
Could it be that my eyes are overly tired or something? If so, what should I do about it?

Thank you for reading that. It's very important to me. I've read online that the pinhole test would suggest a refractive problem rather than something serious like nerve/brain/etc. But still as much as I'm eager to fix that problem, as curious I am what it is.

diplopia means double vision. It means seeing two distinct images with both eyes open. If one eye is shut only see one image.   "Ghosting" means out of one eye do not see a second complete image just lines or objects that have a shadow or line above or beside.

The causes of double vision are to extensive to discuss. Wikipedia has a good discussion.

Then its not 'diplopia" That is about as far as I can take this discussion. Cannot make a diagnosis. See an ophthalmologist Eye MD

Not possible to tell you what this is on internet. The fact that pin hole or bright light makes it better usually implications cornea problem regular or irregular astigmatism. If trouble you see a cornea eye MD ophthalmogist and have a cornea topography test.

I have the same issue. I see two images on bright lights one on top of the other and sometimes below for the past one year. Initially my doctors said it was dry eyes but has not gone away despite using systane ultra and genteal gel. I visited another doctor, he conducted a PENTACAM test but it was all normal. He suggested that I wear contact lens to see if it goes away, but NO it still remains. Meanwhile, now I am also noticing light glares coming out of bright light sources like car headlights, white background in television etc. Also shining star like object in lights (but not much in number). Sometimes it is also difficult for me to get a sharp image in low light conditions. Is this a case of early cataract? Or some other disease? I am 35 years old and diabetic.

I am seeing double vision [in specific Ghosting] also starbursts and streaks from any bright light. I often from many years but i think it has worsened a lot. It is vertical and appears on both the eyes regardless of closing any one. I also checked it using pinhole test and ghosting disappears!! One more peculiar thing is that when i keep my hand very close to my eye that is covering half of my eye, i see a very thin transparent layer just below my hand, which clears the ghosting completely! I see no ghosting within that thin transparent layer. And also when i tilt my head really down and making my eyes look above, again i see no ghosting. And i discussed about starbursts with my parents and they told they do see it. Is it normal for everyone?  IT IS Ghosting vision! PLZZ help me!. Is it curable or should i have it for my entire life. Something also suspects me that it might be dry eyes[use a lot of computer] or astigmatism.

Don't call this double vision. It isn't. Use the term ghosting. Double vision is seeing two of everything that goes away when one eye is covered.

This discussion thread has covered the most common causes: refractive error often astigmatism that is 1. uncorrected 2. not corrected properly with glasses or contact lens;  also cataract formation, cornea disease; less likely macular disease or eyelid abnormalities pressing on the eye.

Dry eye is not a common cause of this. Dry eye can cause ghosting but it generally goes away with blinking or instilling artificial tears.

You need to see eye MD and may need special tests such as cornea topography.

No way to tell.   Worldwide there is a dramatic increase of myopia and its attributed to widespread everyday use of computers, iPads, iPhones, video games, reading and not spending much time outdoors.
thank you very much sir, i have just one other question, i think i have that diplopia  i search on the internet and i saw som cases and im glad i have really the best look than all those cases i saw. and im intresting to know what cost diplopia, and if this is danger, or if that can get worst ?

Im 25 I use pc alot and My problem is when I read som white subtitles on the movie they almost double under Idk what it is but when I get closer they get away and I see just well, also when I just wake up from the sleep I see better, with the moon I see one shadow just under the moon. Thnx for reading if anyone can help me out I will be grateful.

Your symptoms could be explained easily and most commonly by needing glasses especially for "astigmatism" which is an aspherical cornea. Or if you wear glasses or contacts the prescription could be wrong. You need to see an ophthalmologist eye MD or an optometrist.

hello sir, I have 23 years old a computer science student and I found the same problem as you have a year ago, and with pinhole it just goes away and it gets worse during the night, in some articles which I've read around the internet and in this site, somepeople said it could be a cornea problem, but I don't know though, wearing glasses can help but do not completely remove the ghost image, since you said it could be as a result of working too much with computer I think that could be the reason, cause I also work alot with computer since I was 13 or like so,  hopefully someone finds our problem

First this should not be called diplopia which is two distinct images seen when both eyes open which disappears when either eye is covered.
What you describe is ghosting or monocular doubling.

I would not make any diagnosis or provide any useful information based on your observation with the pin hole test.

All of the causes mentioned in these discussions: uncorrected refractive error especially astigmatism, improperly corrected refractive error, corneal disease with irregular astigmatism, cataracts or retina/macular disease are possible causes.

See an ophthalmologist to begin working through the causes.

Hello,

The double vision or ghosting that i am experiencing is vertical and binocular. The ghost image appears above and only very slightly to the right (in both eyes). I was wondering if a professional could give me some insite into the following pinhole test i performed...

I carried out the pinhole test. However something which has not yet been mentioned, happens. Firstly, the pinhole test does produce a clear image. But, If i position the hole slightly raised or move it up, i would see a CLEAR image of the above "ghosted" image which as entioned before, appears above and slightly to the right of the real image when looking in normal site. I would see this image clearly through the pinhole. Then, if i gradually lowered the pinhole down, when it reached about midway over the eye, the initial clear image disappears and a new lower CLEAR image appears. Move the pinhole upward again and that lower image vanishes and the higher up image appears - in either case the image is clear. What does this mean and what in your opinion does it most likely point to?

Much appreciated.

Jon

It is highly unlikely this is due to the yag laser. It is an ultra-safe procedure and performed 100,000's of times each year.

There are however many possible explanations for your problem. Some of the more common: uncorrected or improperly corrected refractive error; corneal disease; macula disease. While highly unlikely and unusual a dislocated IOL might cause these.

You need an ophthalmologist but one that can examine your eyes and work through the various possible causes

To any ophthalmologist who might listen to a dummy like me..
1. I had cataract lens replacement procedure.
2. A Yag procedure was necessary 3 years later, it did help a lot at the time.
3. A few months later the ghost moon, double stars, and doubling of blue
    LEDs came to my world.
4. You should check out the Milky Way with my eyes.
5. Note: All these light sources are nearly pure parallel light sources.
6. It would seem the Yag procedure which removed part of the  back
membrane supporting the replacement lens in my eyes has allowed
the lens itself too deform ever so slightly to the inside.
7. It would not take much of a non symmetrical shape on the back side of
the lens to cause this doubling on the retina.
8. Any help out there Doctor? Do I need new lens with more structural strength?

Did you try a pinhole test? If its brain related the ghost image won't disappear. And also check whether the ghost image disappears if either eye is closed.

hey, I am 18 years old male, i am having exactly the same issue with my right eye and sometimes both of my eyes. I recently hit my head on its topmost part while entering through a door and i did put ice for more than 30 minutes, the area of my head where i hit was swollen too much i could feel it asif there was a potato in my head :D but i got scared out of it, and didnt tell about it to my mother, i just waited 2-3 days and the swollen part gradually reduced everyday, i didnt pay too much attention towards it since i thought it might get me into trauma so i ignored it.

but today after 4 days of the injury, i am feeling very weird with my vision my right eye is seeing a duplicate slightly faded image of what i see ( especially LED lights ) but my left eye works good, i can see the ghost image with both my eyes open but when i cover my right eye it disappears .. but sometimes i can even see the ghost image through my left eye as well after looking at it for over 10 seconds. the ghost image appears exactly above the original image with 1cm distance between the ghost image and the original image on looking at the light at 4-5 feets away

please help me i want to know if this has happened due to my head injury i am very tensed, please help me :(
