Cataracts, Severe Myopia, and Nighttime Driving

Hello.  I am a 39 year old male with severe myopia (contact lens prescription is -12 D in both eyes) and minor astigmatism, and I was recently diagnosed with subcapsular cataracts in both eyes which is at its early stages.  Night driving is very difficult for me -- glare and starbursts are a big problem and my vision at night is very poor.  I currently wear disposable soft contact lenses.  I am considering surgery to remove my cataracts and get aspheric monofocal lense implants, which supposedly will eliminate my night-driving problems, and give me excellent distance vision, but require reading glasses.  Is it possible or likely that my terrible night vision can be improved for the time being by wearing a gas permeable lense instead of a soft contact lense, which would enable me to put off cataract surgery for the time being?

No, if you have subcapsular cataracts.  A glare test will determine your degree of disability.  I would recommend the Crystalens Aspheric which will be available in January.

I do not know know if there will be a power lower enough for your refraction.

Thank you, Dr. Oyakawa.  Does that mean that the Crystalens that others have discussed on this forum is a spheric, rather than aspheric?  Will the the soon-to-be-available Crystalens Aspheric supposedly be able to correct distance vision as well as an aspheric monofocal like the Technis does?  Thanks so much for your responses.
