Double vision

I have had double vision going on two years now and it seems to be getting worse.  My last visit with my eye physician was last week.  I have been seeing him since July.  We have sent my glasses back five times.  My double vision in one on top of the other as in road signs, etc.  We tried different strengths of prisims to no avail.  Can you help?  He suggested I see a neuro-opthomologists.  I live in central Florida.  Do you have any suggestions on what this could possibly be? Should I see my regular Dr. for scans and further testing?

I had to see several doctors before I got help with my double vision.  Many ophthalmologists are not experienced at prescribing prism.  As Dr. O suggested, you could see either a neuro-ophthalmologist or a strabismus (eye muscle) specialist.  You can find one in your area using the doctor directory at www.aao.org.  I suspect that your general ophthalmologist has already done what he can for you, and you need to see a specialist.
