Eye still hurts after foreign body removed

Hi, today I suddenly started having pain and excessive tearing in my eye. My eye was very red and upper lid swollen. After about an hour of trying to wash it out, I went to the Dr. They put in anesthesia drops and of course it felt better. He was able to remove what looked like a piece of sand from the inside of my upper lid and I left feeling great. Now a little more than an hour later my eye is very uncomfortable, eyelid is still very swollen and vision is blurry.  it does still feel like there is something in there, but nothing like before. I couldn't even open  my eye then. Should I just assume that this is the after effects of having the sand in there scratching my eye? Its not red and tearing like before but I thought it would feel ok after the drops wore off. The office is closed now and I don't want to go to the ER or anything if this is normal. Any advice?

Yeah, still uncomfortable but nowhere near the pain i had earlier. Its been a rough day and as usual, mom puts her problems on the back burner. I will check in tomorrow with the Dr. if its not significantly better. I did use some of my favorite frozen veggies on my eye and it seemed to help a little.  Thanks.

Right now, it's just after 9pm where you are, right?  If you're still uncomfortable, call the doc back before it's really late.  Better to do that than (a) suffer while not knowing what to do, or (b) wake the on-call doc at 2am.

If you decide you are not so uncomfortable after all, though, use the cold packs and medication just as you were instructed, and if your eye still bothers you in the morning,  call the doctor's office then.

I did go to an ophthalmologist. he told me to put ice on it and take tylenol and put drops in it.  I assume he was expecting me to be uncomfortable but I wasn't.

Hopefully you went to see an Eye MD ophthalmologist physician. IF so as an MD he should have 24 hr/day "on call" service. I would call the office # and ask to speak to the Eye MD on call and discuss.

If you did not see an Eye MD ophthalmologist and saw a non-MD, non-physician limited scope of practice optometrist then I would go to the ER and try and see the ophthalmologist on call.
