Eye very painful, swollen shut, no injury.

My husbands eye is in bad shape. For about  8 days now. He went to our family Dr. and was given antibiotic eye drops. He has also been taking Advil for the swelling. After 2 days with it getting worse, he went to an eye doctor who told him he had an allergy in the eye. He gave him a steroid eye "goop" to use once a day. His eye is getting worse everyday. Was he mis-diagnosed? When do we go to the ER or another Dr? Its very swollen around the eye, watery, ***** and extremely painful. I hate to see him like this and worry there may be some damage done if we are not treating it right. Ive been surfing the web and cant find any symptoms like his. Please help us, he cant take it anymore. Should we just go to the ER, or are we being too impatient? What could this be?

Maybe i wasnt totally clear, his eyeball is not swollen itself, but swollen around like he has a major black eye. Overnight, it started spreading to the other eye and we went in to the ER Sunday morning. The doctor said his eye was acute and may have an infection of the surrounding eye. He gave him different eye drops and set and appt for a new doctor. So far, we have been to 3 doctors with 3 different diagnoses. He is going to see another specialist this morning. Hopefully, we can get this figured out. He woke up this morning with a large bump in the corner of his eye area. We will update after this visit.

This could be a serious infection of the orbit or sinus.  He should go to an ER.
