Fundus check without dilating pupil

Hello, can you please tell me is it really possible to check interior of the eye without dilating the pupil.. The thing is I went to private clinic to check my operated eye, doc dilated that eye, but he didn't dilated other because I was with my car, and he said that he can see whole retina without dilating. He said that with good equipment one can check whole retina, he had some big machine (I saw it says carl zeiss on it) and loupe. So is it possible?

In some people with healthy eyes and big pupils a good look can be done. In others with small pupils or problems in the eye (cataracts for example) dilation is critical. Also to do a exam of the extreme edge of the retina (ora serrata) dilation and use of a scleral depressor or goniolens is usually necessary.
