Grey Spots on White part of the eye

Dear doctor,

I’ve noticed some grey spots on both the eyes (sclera) of my 3 year old daughter (Indian) from birth. Pediatrician checked these an year before said its normal. But now i noticed that it is growing larger (but not so dark) , noticeable only when we go out in sunlight.

Could you please let me know what is creating this issue? Will it grow further? Is it so serious and will it affect her vision?

Thanks,

Grace

If you use the search feature and look for grey spots on the sclera in children you'll see this is a common question. Normally these are due to the thinner, more transparent sclera (white part) of the eye transmitting the darker layer under the sclera (choroid).  As the sclera thickens these tend to go away. If your pediatrician has looked at it and thinks its normal that probably is the case. If you need further reassurance you could ask for a referral to a pediatric ophthalmologist.    In older people sometimes grey spots due to aging changes of the sclera. (scleral plaques)
