I FEEL LIKE A GUINEA PIG

I had Crystalens IOL's put in both eyes a year ago (June & July 2007) and have had numerous problems with focus (one eye is slightly near-sighted and the other is now far-sighted). Drastic problems with edge glare and poor distance in both eyes at night. Very difficult to drive at night.

My surgeon kept saying I need YAG and my cloudiness was trace to +1, then recently (last week) he said I'm now at 2 to +3 in both eyes, which I suppose means it's worse. If I get the YAG, I'll definitely have better vision at night and less glare from the headlights, but won't help with the edge glare.

Well, naive as I am, I believed him (again). Just hoping for something to get my vision to anywhere near what I had before this whole nightmare with the Crystalens surgery. So he tried to convince me to get the left eye done first, saying it was more cloudy than the right, but thankfully, I resisted since the left is by far the better eye.

I had the right eye YAG'd last Thursday and lo & behold, I now have double vision and huge starbursts when looking at any light source, even the TV!!! It's a disaster to try to drive. So I told the surgeon this problem today and asked if it would ever get better, and of course, he said he had never heard of such problems, AGAIN. Just like he said about the edge glare.

So, he checked my eyes and said it's all good, the left eye has very little cloudiness (just a trace) don't worry about it -- see you in a year!! Amazing. Last week he tried his best to tell me the left absolutely needed to be YAG'd.

He has a reputation in our county as being "the best" but I figure that's because he's really the only surgeon that does Cataracts and YAG. And he's been here for years. I think he's using some of us as Guinea Pigs and he's in the "back pocket" of the Crystalens company, which he aggressively pushes on people like me without cataracts, even holding monthly seminars and giving away prizes for attending. There should be a law against this.

I can't believe they never even suggested bi-focal or multifocal contacts to me or simply telling me to get a slightly lower prescription on my regular contacts to help with my close-up vision. I could have worn glasses for distance at night, if I needed it.

Now, I'm going to have to go through this trauma all over again, like I did last year. I was suicidal then, but I'm dealing with this newest horror a bit better this time. I just want people to be warned.

So sorry to learn that your problems continue.  Please consider crossing the county line to consult a top regional cataract surgeon, preferably someone very experienced with the Crystalens.
