Is Lutein good for eyes?

I read that Lutein is good for eye health. I never heard of it or have any knowledge of it. My eye doctor said it is good for my vision but she didn't explain much about it.

What is lutein? And is it good for my eyes?

My eyes are prone to retinal detachment. I have a mild ERM in one eye, Lattice Degeneration, Lots of lasering. I think that is all that is relevant. I forgot to ask my retina doc lat time about these supplements. I will give his office a call, but I also wanted to your opinions.

Should I take Lutein? Fish Oil? What else?

Thanks

The results from the AREDS studies are actually quite impressive having gone through them lately. I now take preservision (2/day) with Lutein for myopic degeneration. There are very few (if any) reported side effects so I think it is worth a try. CVS are doing some good offers on these pills at the moment :)

It is protective pigment that collects in the macula and can ask like a "sunscreen" to protect from harmful blue and uv light which can over the years contrubute to macular degeneration.  It is most useful for macular degeneration and I highly recommend it.  I usually combine it with an AREDS type vitamin for severe macular degneration or for moderate cases, I often recommend I-Caps lutein and zeanthine formula.  Omega 3 fish oil is also very helpful.
