I was born with lamellar cataracts in both eyes. I still have one of them in my right eye and the left I have an IOL with very good vision in both. I am now 24 and have seen a geneticist (pediatric given this is since birth) who said they don’t believe I have any underlying condition. (I do have ptosis and joint hyper mobility but they still think I’m fine) Now I’m not terribly worried as I understand the majority of systemic diseases associated with congenital cataracts are very noticeable and things time alone has ruled out for me personally however I keep finding contradicting evidence of information regarding bilateral congenital cataracts. I have read that bilateral congenital cataracts have a 5-10% chance of being linked to a larger disorder, I’ve also read they have a one in three chance of being linked to a larger disorder and I’ve also seen they were said to have a 60% chance of being related to a bigger disorder. I am very confused by that contradicting information and was wondering if there is a more concise set of info used by eye doctors etc. I just can’t help but read about the issues and wonder why more tests weren’t ran when I was a child given I have absolutely no family history of congenital cataract.
