3 1/2 yr old Son opening his eyes wide and at times looking to the side

Hello!  About 3 weeks ago my 3 1/2 yr old Son began opening his eyes wide several times a day and also would look of to one side w/both eyes (up or down) at times.  He is aware that he is doing it and will replicate the movement.  He says that his eyes don't hurt.  It went on for about 2 weeks and his Pre-school teacher had even mentioned it to me.  Then it stopped.  2 days ago he started doing it again.  It isn't at any one particular time or during any specific activity.  I have done visual testing with him both close up and far away, and he passes with flying colors.  He will sit and color/draw for several minutes without any issues.  He has no problem doing "hidden picture" type activities.  He is otherwise very healthy and very smart.(identifies all colors, numbers/letters, counts to 100, writes his name and my Daughters name)  He is very outgoing and friendly.  He has his temper tantrums but nothing out of the ordinary.  He never had these issues through the Summer or even at the start of school (Sep.1st)  His Teacher says that it doesn't affect his participation at school.I do notice that it seems to be worse when he is tired. (looking of to the side happens more)  I am becomming very concerned and worried.  We have made it a point not to talk to him about it because he seemed to become upset when we would ask him why he was doing it.  We have an appt w/an Opthamologist but we couldn't get an appt. until Dec 21st.  I don't know how I will wait that long.  I have read info regarding magnesium def. and childrens eye problems.  I am just really at a loss right now.

I have an appt on Dec 21st but was trying to get some idea of what I may be dealing with.  I am also taking him to his Pediatrician today.
