Left eye becomes huge and I can't seem to blink.

For a little while now I seem to have this problem every so often that my left eye only, sort of becomes paralyzed, it becomes much larger than my right eye, and I can't blink it closed. I guess this problem has been persisting for more than 6 months. I was just wondering if anyone knew what this could possibly be?

Without seeing you personally I can't say for certain. It sounds like you are having "exophthalmia" or "proptosis." The most common cause of this condition is related to the thyroid, sometimes called graves disease or thyroid eye disease. Other causes are low or high flow cavernous fistulas, cancer in the eye socket, orbital inflammatory disease and other very rare causes. Sometimes temporary eye muscle paralysis problems can cause this problem too. Again, thyroid disease is the most common cause. You need to seek the care of an Eye MD (ophthalmologist).

I went to see an eye Dr. today. He said my eye seemed quite normal other than the astigmatism in it. All the nerves and such he said seemed quite healthy. He gave me a prescription for new glasses. He instructed me to get it filled and to see him in 3 weeks for a follow up. Would I have to have further testing to see if any of those problems would be noticeable or would they have been apparent in the appointment? Thank you for replying Dr.
