I went in to my ophthalmologist for my annual apt. The doctor said that my optic nerve was enlarged and he wanted to run tests. After running a few tests, he said that basically my nerve is just larger than the hole that it goes out of so it sticks out a little instead of laying down. He said this could be (and he thinks it is) totally normal to me (maybe something I was born with), but he wanted to run an MRI just in case. I am 24 and this is the first time anyone has seen this. I am waiting for my MRI results, but if it does come back normal, he said he would see me next year for my annual. If the MRI comes back normal, does this condition with my optic nerve have a name? Does it pose any threats? Is there any additional information that I should be aware of? Is it genetic? What could have caused it?
