To Whom It May Concern-
I am an IIH patient who had bilateral optic nerve fenestrations in 2009 due to the increased intracranial pressure from the disorder. At the time I was considered legally blind, but since the operation have been blessed to recover my 20/20 vision. I have a left afferent pupil defect as a mild side effect of surgery. In 2012 I received a VP shunt to control my intracranial pressure as maximum medical therapy failed. My shunt is now two years old and working effectively at the current setting of 1.5 (Medtronic Strata valve- programmable). I experience many headaches a week and also have TVOs in my left peripheral field daily. Upon examination by my optometrist, optic nerve fullness and blurring of the optic nerve margins were discovered this month. I relayed the concern to my neuro-opthamologist and he said this is consistent with his observations from the past few checkups with him, spanning over a year. I continue to have increasing TVOs weekly and I am concerned about the continued fullness and blurring of my optic nerve.
Are there any concerns about protecting my vision long-term based on my above history? Is it typical to have some blurring of optic nerve margins, fullness of the nerve and TVOs post-fenestration and VP shunt? I have also noticed an increase in the incidences of my pupil defect (enlarging) as the TVOs increase as well. The TVOs are just unsettling as it appears someone is sneaking up on me from the side, which is never a pleasant sensation.
I greatly appreciate any advice you can provide as I have put myself through a lot of medical procedures in order to ensure my vision and overall health are headed in a positive direction.
Much appreciated-
Stacy
